9 Apps I "heart"

I suppose TECHNICALLY I could live with out apps... but these make things just a bit easier - and isn't that what all mom's need???

Side note:  The apps I've listed are for
iPhone 4, and are in no particular order.
Any prices I've mentioned are in
Canadian funds:
Period Tracker Lite - track your monthly cycle
just Wink Greeting Cards - send free greeting cards
Calendar Goo (Google Calendar) - sycs with Google Calendar
Pranayama Universal Breathing - 7 minute breathing meditation - for when you just can't remember how to spell
What's App - international texting program
Goodreads - social network for book lovers
Bookmark - for audio books and podcasts

Period  Tracker (Lite) by GP Apps:
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1 or later.  Also available for an-droid.
The Lite version is free, the paid version is $1.99

Track your monthly cycles including start & finish date, dates you had sex (great for if you are trying to get "preggers", it also tells you when you are ovulating), moods, physical symptoms, weight, etc.   Handy if you need to chat with your doctor about any issues you may have.  I found the predicted average length of cycle accurate as well as the start dates.  There are lots of settings to choose from, making it a very personalized app.

just Wink by American Greetings

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.

BEST free greeting card app EVER!  Lots of funny, sweet, beautifully designed cards.  Personalize them and send them via email, text msg, Facebook, Twitter - even order a hard copy and they will mail it for you!  They also provide frequent updates with new cards.  I send these cards for occasions but LOVE to surprise friends with the odd "thinking of you" note.

CalenGoo (sync with Google Calendar™) by: Dominique Andr Gunia
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
If you use Google Calendar (with all it's bells and whistles - ie. colour codes, tasks, reminders, etc), you need this app!  It is totally worth the $6.99 price tag - and I'm not one to spend money on apps.  There are too many functions for me to get into in this review.  If you don't mind spending some time getting the settings right for your needs, this app will become invaluable.  That being said, if you don't like to have lots of choices in the set up, you may find this one frustrating.   I love that I can choose which calendars to sync, that it looks JUST like my Google calendar, and the auto-sync feature is so great - I always know it's up to date when booking appointments at the doctors/dentist/etc.

Universal Breathing - Pranayama Free by: Saagara
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later.
I know I am a shallow breather, and that meditation would "do my body good".  I just don't have time  (or opportunity) as a mom of 2 young boys.  I also know that after following this app for 7 minutes (usually at bedtime) I am extremely relaxed, after 14 minutes I fall asleep.  What makes this app stand out from the other's I've tried?  The music guides you through both the intake and exhaling of one breath over and over for seven minutes.  After one session, my limbs felt warmer and relaxed (yay healthy blood flow!)  Only negative   it doesn't allow your device to "sleep", so if you fall asleep the image stays on the screen overnight.

There is a free version, and a $4.99 version.  The only difference I can see is the $4.99 one gives you a course to follow and is more "personalized". Dictionary & Thesaurus - Free:  by, LLC
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later. For the times when I experience a "mommy brain" and can't remember how to spell a simple word, this app is great.  It has three functions I find really handy:  1 - Voice search - for some reason the word "private" always trips me up... "private" "privet"?  Press the microphone button on this app and speak the word. The app will find it for you (pretty accurate too)   2 - Audio pronunciation - the app will read out the word you've just looked up, just like on the website  3 - Offline access - no internet connection needed!

What's App Messenger by: WhatsApp Inc.
Compatible with iPhone. Requires iOS 3.1 or later. There is also an an-droid version available.

From the iTunes store: "Just like there is no added cost to send an international email, there is no cost to send WhatsApp messages internationally. Chat with your friends all over the world as long as they have WhatsApp Messenger installed and avoid those pesky international SMS costs."

I can vouch for this.  I have a handful of friends I use this app with and I have never been charged for international texting.  It was free when I downloaded it, but it is now $0.99.  Send texts, video and photos. The only negative: once in a while it does go offline, preventing me from sending or receiving.  It does, however, save messages sent to you while offline.

Goodreads by: Goodreads
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Goodreads is a social network for booklovers.  Update progress on your current reads, review books, create virtual bookshelves, read recommendations, connect with friends - there is so much to do on the site and from the app.  A handy feature:  scan books into your "to-read" shelf from the barcode scanner - read reviews before you buy.  I use this at bookstores and at the library.

Bookmark by: DockMarket LLC
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later

I tried 5 audio-book apps before I found this one.  It has a user-friendly interface, holds your place in multiple books and podcasts, and automatically detect your audio-books and podcasts.  I got frustrated with iTunes inability to hold my place in a book after I switched to listen to music.  If you listen to either, it's worth the $1.99.

Bump by:  Bump Technologies inc
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.

This one is a well know app - but I just learned that you can bump photos to your computer!  So no more emailing myself pictures.  Go to Bump's website and follow the directions.  Their site doesn't keep copies, and there's no signing/logging in - such a time saver and convenient.

If you have any apps you would like to share with me, please feel free to leave a comment!
